The Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County (LASPBC) is a non-profit charitable law firm dedicated to ensuring equal access to the justice system for the low-income, disadvantaged and traditionally underserved residents of Palm Beach County and surrounding areas.

Our Relative Caregiver Project (hereinafter “RCP”) helps extended family members navigate through the family court system to ensure that they receive temporary legal custody of children under the age of 18 who are living with them. By obtaining custody or adoption finalization in some instances, the client will leave RCP with the ability to fully meet the needs of the children in their care, including the ability to consent to medical procedures, enroll the children in school, and otherwise act as the child’s legal custodian. The RCP also provides legal assistance and support to parents and caregivers who have children approaching 18 years old with developmental or intellectual disabilities in obtaining guardian advocacy in probate court.

We are currently seeking a compassionate and resourceful Case Manager to help our community.

JOB SUMMARY:

The RCP Case Manager is responsible for identifying appropriate service referrals, making timely referrals, and providing prompt follow-up on referrals to ensure that the client and their family timely receive services.  The RCP Case Manager is tasked with assisting the RCP client in applying for benefits they are entitled to including but not limited to Social Security, Food Stamps, and Survivor Benefits.

The RCP Case Manager develops, maintains, and strengthens relationships with clients, community providers, non-profit organizations, referral sources and other community partners to further support clients’ needs.  In addition, the RCP Case Manager will be expected to attend and meaningfully participate in weekly case reviews with the RCP Attorney, RCP Paralegal, and other RCP staff members.

Work schedule is as follows: generally, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with occasional to regular evening and/or weekend work, as needed to support clients effectively. Travel throughout Palm Beach County is required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Function as a valuable member of the team to include RCP Attorney, RCP Paralegal and other RCP team members.  This includes routinely sharing information and engaging in ongoing communication with RCP team members.
  • Assess the clients’ situations to determine areas of assistance needed.
  • Identify and address their needs throughout the life of the case, make appropriate referrals for the RCP client and follow up on the status of the referral.
  • Assist clients in applying for benefits, to which they are entitled, including but not limited to Social Security, Food Stamps, ELC Vouchers, Summer Scholarships and Survivor Benefits.
  • Make in-person contact within 14 days of client assignment, and then subsequent consistent, meaningful weekly contact (by phone, email,  text, etc.) with RCP clients to ensure services needed are in place and resources are provided timely when identified.
  • Engage in monthly ongoing professional development in areas where clients routinely need support.
  • Comply with all training requirements set by Children’s Services Council, including participation in planning sessions and workgroups within the community.
  • Attend monthly Kinship Support meeting with Families First, in person preferred, Zoom attendance when in person is not feasible.
  • Meaningfully schedule, coordinate and participate in 5 Outreach Events per calendar year in compliance with the Children’s Services Council contract.
  • Maintain courteous, professional and effective working relationships with Legal Aid employees and clients.
  • Display a team-focused attitude, including working well with other staff members to form a positive, supportive team environment.
  • Track data to assist in finding trends within the program.
  • Keep accurate accounting of time spent on each client’s case on the LegalServer platform.
  • Comply with all Agency Policies and Procedures, including accurate and honest timekeeping and billing in LegalServer, and in the P:drive.
  • Assist the Executive Director, and RCP Supervising Attorney with special projects, assignments and any additional duties as deemed necessary.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Behavioral Sciences, Human Services or related field; Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Mental Health Counseling or related social services preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working with children, families,  and disadvantaged, underserved populations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Advanced computer skills required, including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and Outlook. Ability to access and regularly use database applications such as case management software and Legal Aid’s P:drive for document management and sharing.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, organizational and planning skills.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish or English/Creole) preferred.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Consumer Advocacy Paralegal provides comprehensive legal and administrative support to attorneys representing individuals in consumer protection matters. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts client telephone calls, performs preliminary case screening, and assists with determining client needs for Consumer Advocacy Unit matters.
  • Completes client intake and prepares cases through investigation, document review, fact gathering, and efforts to achieve early resolution with adverse parties when appropriate.
  • Prepares matters for administrative filings, including investigating complaints, organizing supporting documentation, submitting required materials, and following up with administrative agencies.
  • Assists with litigation preparation, including drafting and organizing pleadings, correspondence, exhibits, discovery materials, and other case-related documents under attorney supervision.
  • E-files pleadings and other court documents with the appropriate clerk of court in accordance with applicable procedures and deadlines.
  • Maintains accurate and organized case files, updates the case management system, tracks deadlines, and performs related administrative duties necessary to support effective case handling.
  • Participates in trainings, presentations, consumer workshops, outreach events, and community programs to provide information and assistance to eligible clients and community members.
  • Prepares, orders, organizes, and distributes consumer education materials, including flyers, brochures, and other outreach resources for community organizations and events.
  • Attends staff meetings, case meetings, outreach events, and other community meetings as assigned.
  • Accurately records time spent on each client matter through the agency’s online case management system.
  • Stays informed about emerging issues, professional developments, and changes in consumer protection and related legal areas.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of all client, case, and agency information.
  • Complies with all agency policies, procedures, ethical standards, and applicable legal requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience

  • Associate’s Degree or higher; or Paralegal certificate or equivalent; Paralegal certification preferred.
  • One (1) year of experience in the legal field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in consumer advocacy, consumer protection, housing, public benefits, or related civil legal services matters preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Specialized or legal knowledge required to be able to provide legal support services, draft pleadings, understand court rules and procedures.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications (Word, Excel, Outlook), electronic case management systems, and court filing systems.

The Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County’s Elder Law Project provides critical legal assistance to individuals over 60 years of age. We are committed to protecting the rights of seniors and empowering them to live with dignity, independence, and security.

Job Summary

The Elder Law Project Attorney will provide comprehensive legal representation and advocacy to seniors in St. Lucie, Martin, Okeechobee, Indian River, and Palm Beach Counties. This position focuses broadly on elder law matters, including estate planning, guardianship, housing stability, public benefits, and protection from abuse and exploitation.

This role supports the expansion of services into the Treasure Coast and requires both individual client representation and community engagement. The attorney will represent clients holistically, utilizing litigation, negotiation, and advocacy to achieve client-centered outcomes.

The position requires travel within the assigned counties, participation in outreach efforts, and active involvement in community partnerships.

Work schedule is generally Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., with occasional evening or weekend work as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Represent elderly clients in a wide range of civil legal matters, including:

* Estate planning (wills, advance directives, powers of attorney)

* Guardianship and incapacity proceedings

* Elder abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation

* Housing and landlord/tenant issues, including eviction defense

* Consumer protection matters

* Public benefits (e.g., Social Security, SSI, Medicaid, Medicare)

  • Conduct client interviews at office and community locations.
  • Counsel and advise clients on legal rights, options, and long-term planning.
  • Investigate cases, gather evidence, and coordinate with social service agencies and community resources.
  • Draft pleadings, briefs, motions, wills, and other legal documents.
  • Analyze client facts to identify legal issues and provide referrals when appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate client records, files, and timekeeping in LegalServer.
  • Build and maintain relationships with social service agencies, community partners, and government entities.
  • Deliver community education and trainings for seniors, caregivers, and service providers.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school
  • Active member of the Florida Bar.
  • 1–3 years of legal experience (experience in elder law, probate, or litigation preferred).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Florida and Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and Evidence.
  • Strong legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) and e-filing systems.
  • Ability to handle a diverse, high-volume caseload independently.
  • Experience with community outreach and public presentations.

The Executive Director serves as the Chief Strategic Officer, guiding the organization’s vision, planning, operations, and long-term sustainability. The Executive Director provides visionary leadership while serving as the organization’s principal ambassador, fundraiser, and relationship builder, cultivating the philanthropic partnerships and community support necessary to expand access to justice. The role fosters a positive organizational culture, strengthens community relations, and ensures the delivery of high-quality legal and litigation services to underserved populations. The Executive Director collaborates with the Board of Directors, committees, staff, and external partners to advance the mission and impact of the organization. This position reports directly to the Board of Directors, and performance is evaluated on an annual basis by the Board of Directors. Work schedule varies based on organizational needs and business hours of Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., with frequent evening and/or weekend requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Visionary Leadership
• Lead with authenticity and purpose, energizing staff, board members, and partners to pursue transformative change.
• Inspire and articulate a bold, compelling, and forward-thinking vision that reimagines access to justice and centers dignity, equity, and fairness.
• Anticipate emerging legal, political, economic and social trends affecting underserved communities and position the organization as a catalyst in the evolving landscape of civil legal advocacy.
• Promote systemic advocacy and civil justice efforts that address root causes of injustice.

Strategic Planning
• Lead the development and implementation of a clear direction grounded in community needs and long-term impact, by establishing measurable goals, and encouraging innovation and continuous learning.
• Evaluate progress and effective program delivery, while ensuring organizational adaptability in a changing legal, social, and funding landscape.
• Aim for the highest standards of legal excellence, client-centered service, and ethical practice.
• Present a holistic view of client services through the development of new initiatives and systemic reforms that provide easier access for clients.

Organizational Culture

Collaboration with Board Members and Committees
• Coordinate a reporting structure that supports long-term health of the organization through close partnership with the Board of Directors’ Resource Development Committee, and the Director of Philanthropy.
• Engage stakeholders as advisors to support governance, policy development, and strategic oversight.
• Cultivate trust and shared leadership through transparent communication by scheduling board and committee meetings, preparing agendas and presenting organizational performance and key initiatives.

Financial Stewardship
• Lead a strong philanthropic culture by building and nurturing partnerships with funders.
• Develop and increase diversified revenue streams to fuel long-term sustainability and growth.
• Ensure the organization’s financial health through transparency, fiscal accountability, and strategic
foresight, by overseeing the annual budget, financial reports and funding compliance.
• Align financial decisions with mission priorities and regulatory requirements.

Fundraising
• Partner closely with the Board of Directors to increase board engagement in fundraising, donor cultivation, advocacy, and community relationship development.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with philanthropic leaders, private foundations, corporations, community organizations, elected officials, and strategic partners to expand organizational visibility and financial sustainability.
• Collaborate with the Development team to establish annual fundraising goals, monitor campaign performance, and evaluate return on investment across all fundraising initiatives.
• Stay abreast of emerging philanthropic trends and innovative funding opportunities that advance the organization’s mission and long-term strategic priorities.
• Represent the organization at donor meetings, fundraising events, community functions, and public engagements to inspire investment in equal access to justice.
• Foster a sustainable fundraising culture in which philanthropy is viewed as a shared organization responsibility supporting long-term mission success.

Community Relations
• Lead outreach efforts to increase the organization’s visibility and strengthen its reputation.
• Serve as the main spokesperson and trusted ambassador for the organization, by being a compelling voice for justice, elevating critical issues through public speaking engagements, advocacy, and media relations to advance civil justice initiatives.
• Serve as primary liaison with the judiciary, and local bar associations, including presenting at bar association functions.
• Foster and maintain collaborative relationships with funders, and community stakeholders.
• Strategically place key staff members in community roles to increase the depth of the organization’s
community support and transformative power by building bridges across sectors.

SUPERVISES
Directly manages Director and Chief level positions of the Leadership Team.

POSITION RELATIONSHIPS
The position requires regular contact with external and internal stakeholders, such as donors and Board of Directors. Frequently collaborates with the Leadership Team, including the Deputy Director. This role is supervised by and reports directly to the Board of Directors.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience
• Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) from an A.B.A. accredited law school.
• Member in good standing and licensee of The Florida Bar (or eligible for admission).
• 15 years of legal advocacy experience, with at least five (5) years in poverty law or civil legal services and substantial litigation experience.
• Five (5) years of progressively responsible leadership experience, ideally within non-profit, legal services, or public interest sectors.
• Experience managing complex organizations with multiple program areas and funding sources.
• Proven executive leadership experience, including demonstrated success securing philanthropic investments within a nonprofit organization.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Knowledge of substantive poverty law areas (housing, family law, public benefits, consumer, etc.).
• Understanding of nonprofit governance, grant management, and compliance requirements.
• Cultural competency and ability to work effectively with diverse staff, clients, and stakeholders.
• Strong strategic planning, organizational development, and financial management skills.
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills with ability to exercise sound judgment.
• Strong organizational and time management skills with ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Excellent interpersonal, public speaking and communication skills, both written and oral.
• Ability to inspire and influence teams, build and strengthen stakeholder relationships.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a leadership team and collaborate across departments.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Salary Range:
Competitive salary of $200,000 to $225,000 per year, depending on qualifications.

• Vacation leave earnings equal 2.4 weeks per year (beginning the first of the month after 30 days of employment) and increases to 3 weeks per year after two years of employment.
