Why It Matters

Justice Should Not Depend on What Someone Can Afford

In criminal proceedings, the law guarantees a right to counsel. In civil cases — evictions, foreclosures, domestic violence injunctions, custody battles, benefits denials, wage theft — there is no such right. Residents who cannot afford a lawyer often go without one, facing the legal system against landlords, employers, and government agencies that all have attorneys.

Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County exists to close that gap. For more than 75 years, Legal Aid PBC has provided free civil legal representation to low-income residents, protecting their housing, their families, their safety, and their livelihoods.

When funding is limited, more people go unserved. Your donation extends Legal Aid's reach to residents who need civil legal help but cannot get it anywhere else.

Florida Attorneys: Give or Volunteer — Both Fulfill Your Bar Responsibility

The Rules Regulating the Florida Bar ask each attorney to render 20 hours of pro bono service annually — or make a financial contribution of at least $350 to a legal aid organization. The Campaign for Equal Justice allows attorneys to fulfill this responsibility through a financial gift to Legal Aid PBC. For those who prefer to volunteer directly, pro bono case opportunities are available in a wide range of civil practice areas.

Donation Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Yes. The Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County, Inc. is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. You will receive a confirmation for your records following your gift.

Does 100% of my donation go to Legal Aid?

Yes. Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County does not use a professional fundraising solicitor. 100% of each contribution goes directly to the organization to support civil legal services. A copy of the official registration and financial information (CH187) may be obtained from the Florida Division of Consumer Services at FloridaConsumerHelp.com or by calling 1-800-435-7352.

What is the Circle of Justice monthly giving program?

Circle of Justice is Legal Aid PBC's monthly sustaining donor program. Monthly donors provide reliable, year-round support that allows Legal Aid to plan staffing and services consistently — rather than relying on unpredictable one-time gifts. Monthly donations can be adjusted or cancelled at any time with no penalty.

Can Florida attorneys give financially instead of doing pro bono hours?

Yes. The Rules Regulating the Florida Bar allow attorneys to fulfill their annual pro bono professional responsibility by making a financial contribution of at least $350 to a legal aid organization instead of completing 20 hours of pro bono service. Contributions to Legal Aid PBC through the Campaign for Equal Justice satisfy this requirement. Contact the Pro Bono team at EJC@legalaidpbc.org for the annual participation form.

How do I make a planned gift, donate stock, or explore other giving options?

For planned giving, stock donations, appreciated assets, or other non-cash contributions, please contact the Legal Aid Society Philanthropy Department directly at 561-655-8944 or reach out through the main contact page at legalaidpbc.org. The team will work with you and your advisors to structure a gift that meets your goals.

How can I verify that Legal Aid Society is a registered nonprofit?

The Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County, Inc. is registered with the Florida Division of Consumer Services as charity CH187. A copy of the official registration and financial information may be obtained at FloridaConsumerHelp.com or by calling 1-800-435-7352 within Florida.
