Buzz From Our Executive Director -
Learn More About Legal Aid’s First Project, Family Law

November 08, 2017 - Now that we are finished with ghouls and goblins it’s time to begin preparations for my favorite holiday, Thanksgiving.  It is a time when our thoughts turn to family and friends and in keeping with that theme our October/November Monthly Buzz highlights our Family Law Project.

When I first started working at Legal Aid in 1981 the focus of the organization was on handling dissolution of marriage, paternity, child support, and visitation matters.  The attorneys did provide some services in housing, consumer and social security matters, but we were primarily a family law practice.  In the 1990s grants from various agencies including the United Way of Palm Beach County, the Area Agency on Aging of Palm Beach and the Treasure Coast, and the Children’s Services Council of Palm Beach County allowed us to expand our services to encompass Children’s, Elder, and Health Advocacy.  Today we have twenty-one (21) different projects; however, funding to handle family law cases aside from domestic violence matters has significantly decreased.  We are fortunate to have on staff Ross Baer, the Supervising Attorney of the Family Law Project who, together with Staff Attorney Amy Francis and Senior Paralegal Jennifer Rothman continue to make significant strides in the family law arena.  We are also grateful to receive assistance from a number of family law attorneys in private practice who handle family law cases for us on a pro bono basis.

Also featured in this issue is Senior Foster Children’s Project Attorney Amy Genet who recently received the statewide Guardian Ad Litem Excellence Award for 2017.

Once again the law firms of Silber & Davis, Kirk Friedland, Esq., and Burlington & Rockenbach have been instrumental in securing an award of cy pres funds for Legal Aid.  This time the amount ordered by the court was $205,723.

Finally, this issue congratulates the law firm of Schwed, Adams, Sobel & McGinley, P.A. who repeated their success of 2016 by capturing the Cup of Justice trophy at Legal Aid’s 17th Annual Cup of Justice Golf Classic.

Wishing you and your family and loved ones a wonderful Thanksgiving.
