Buzz From Our Executive Director -
Our Educational Advocacy Project Introduces New Education Tool Kit

August 29, 2017 - Now that school has started for most of the children in Palm Beach County this edition of the Monthly Buzz will highlight the amazing work being done by our Educational Advocacy Project and the introduction of our newly created Education Tool Kit.  The Tool Kit was developed by our Educational Advocacy team to assist parents and caretakers of children who attend Palm Beach County’s Public School system to navigate the numerous complex state and federal statutes and regulations governing a student’s rights to services and accommodations in a public school setting.  The Tool Kit took over 300 hours to develop and will be an invaluable resource to empower parents and caretakers to advocate for the students in their care.  Its production was made possible through the generosity of numerous funders who are listed later in this issue.  The Tool Kit was rolled out on August 16, 2017 at The Lord’s Place Family Center campus for 30 parents who reside at the Center.  The roll out consisted of group presentations and one on one consultations with parents regarding their children’s rights.  Numerous additional workshops have been scheduled throughout Palm Beach County in 2017-2018.

This issue also introduces the outstanding staff of the Project led by Supervising Attorney Melissa Duncan who, with able assistance from Staff Attorneys Erica Sonn and Rayne Bienenfeld, Paralegal Tatum Coutee and Education Advocate Deborah Berger make up an outstanding advocacy team.

The Board Member Spotlight introduces 2nd Vice-President of our Board of Directors, Robert Friedman.  In addition to being an officer and active member of our 32 member Board of Directors, Rob provides numerous hours of pro bono services through Legal Aid’s Non-Profit Legal Assistance Project.  Rob is nationally renowned as one of Florida’s leading insurance attorneys, exclusively representing policy holders.
